Measurement, Geometry and Money MCQs

Civil Service Exam numerical ability reviewer on perimeter, area and volume, angles, the Pythagorean theorem, unit conversions, time calculations and handling money, all solved by hand.

20 MCQsUpdated 3 November 2026

Everyday measurement and money questions appear in the basic operations and word problems of the Civil Service Exam Numerical Ability section. This set covers perimeter, area and volume of common shapes, angles of triangles and polygons, the Pythagorean theorem, metric and time conversions, giving change and unit prices.

Write the formula before substituting numbers, and keep the units with every answer: m for length, m² for area and m³ for volume. Every answer here was calculated and checked by script.

What is the perimeter of a rectangular lot 12 m long and 8 m wide?

    Correct answer: A. 40 m

    Perimeter of a rectangle = 2 × (length + width) = 2 × (12 + 8) = 40 m. The area, 12 × 8 = 96 m², is a common wrong choice.

What is the area of a triangle with a base of 10 cm and a height of 6 cm?

    Correct answer: A. 30 cm²

    Area of a triangle = ½ × base × height = ½ × 10 × 6 = 30 cm². Forgetting the ½ gives 60, the area of the rectangle with the same base and height.

Using π = 22/7, what is the area of a circle with a radius of 7 cm?

    Correct answer: D. 154 cm²

    Area = πr² = 22/7 × 7 × 7 = 22 × 7 = 154 cm². With r = 7, one 7 cancels the denominator, which is why exam items often use radii that are multiples of 7.

Using π = 22/7, what is the circumference of a circle with a radius of 14 cm?

    Correct answer: D. 88 cm

    Circumference = 2πr = 2 × 22/7 × 14 = 2 × 22 × 2 = 88 cm. The area of the same circle would be 616 cm², a distractor. Circumference measures the distance around, in cm.

What is the volume of a box 5 cm long, 4 cm wide and 3 cm high?

    Correct answer: A. 60 cm³

Volume of a rectangular box = length × width × height = 5 × 4 × 3 = 60 cm³. Volume is measured in cubic units because it multiplies three lengths.

How many minutes are there in 3.5 hours?

    Correct answer: D. 210 minutes

    One hour has 60 minutes, so 3.5 hours = 3.5 × 60 = 210 minutes. A common slip is reading 3.5 hours as 3 hours 50 minutes; 0.5 hour is 30 minutes.

How many grams are there in 2.75 kilograms?

    Correct answer: A. 2,750 g

One kilogram is 1,000 grams, so 2.75 kg = 2.75 × 1,000 = 2,750 g. Multiplying by 1,000 moves the decimal point three places to the right.

How many litres are in 1,500 millilitres?

    Correct answer: B. 1.5 L

    One litre is 1,000 millilitres, so 1,500 mL = 1,500 ÷ 1,000 = 1.5 L. Going from a smaller unit to a larger one means dividing.

A client pays ₱500 for a fee of ₱347. How much change should the cashier give?

    Correct answer: A. ₱153

    Change = ₱500 − ₱347 = ₱153. A quick mental method: from ₱347 count up ₱3 to ₱350, then ₱150 to ₱500, for a total of ₱153.

Folders are sold at 3 for ₱45. How much do 12 folders cost?

    Correct answer: D. ₱180

    One folder costs ₱45 ÷ 3 = ₱15, so 12 folders cost 12 × ₱15 = ₱180. Alternatively, 12 folders are 4 sets of 3, and 4 × ₱45 = ₱180.

A square has an area of 81 m². What is its perimeter?

    Correct answer: A. 36 m

The side of the square is √81 = 9 m, so the perimeter is 4 × 9 = 36 m. Area and perimeter use different formulas, so always find the side first.

Two angles of a triangle measure 50° and 60°. What is the third angle?

    Correct answer: D. 70°

The angles of every triangle add up to 180°, so the third angle is 180° − 50° − 60° = 70°. This rule holds for every triangle, whatever its shape or size. Since the third angle is less than 90°, this triangle is acute.

What is the sum of the interior angles of a pentagon?

    Correct answer: B. 540°

    The sum of the interior angles of a polygon with n sides is (n − 2) × 180°. For a pentagon, (5 − 2) × 180° = 540°. For a regular pentagon, each angle is 540° ÷ 5 = 108°.

A vehicle travels at 90 km/h. What is its speed in metres per second?

    Correct answer: B. 25 m/s

    Multiply km/h by 1,000/3,600, which simplifies to 5/18: 90 × 5/18 = 25 m/s. To go from m/s back to km/h, multiply by 18/5.

A meeting starts at 9:45 a.m. and lasts 2 hours and 30 minutes. What time does it end?

    Correct answer: C. 12:15 p.m.

    Add 2 hours first: 9:45 a.m. + 2 hours = 11:45 a.m. Then add 30 minutes: 11:45 + 15 minutes = 12:00 noon, plus the remaining 15 minutes = 12:15 p.m.

A 30-day training begins on 1 June, counting 1 June as day 1. On what date is the last day of training?

    Correct answer: B. 30 June

If 1 June is day 1, then day 30 falls on 30 June, because June has 30 days. 31 June does not exist, and 1 July would be day 31.

How many ₱20 bills make ₱1,000?

    Correct answer: A. 50

    Divide the total by the value of one bill: ₱1,000 ÷ ₱20 = 50 bills. Check: 50 × ₱20 = ₱1,000. Similarly, ₱1,000 equals 10 ₱100 bills, 20 ₱50 bills or 2 ₱500 bills.

A room is 4 m long and 3 m wide. How many square tiles measuring 0.5 m by 0.5 m are needed to cover the floor?

    Correct answer: C. 48

    The floor area is 4 × 3 = 12 m², and each tile covers 0.5 × 0.5 = 0.25 m². So 12 ÷ 0.25 = 48 tiles. Equivalently, 8 tiles fit along the length and 6 along the width: 8 × 6 = 48.

A right triangle has legs of 6 m and 8 m. How long is the hypotenuse?

    Correct answer: B. 10 m

    By the Pythagorean theorem, c² = 6² + 8² = 36 + 64 = 100, so c = √100 = 10 m. The 6-8-10 triangle is a multiple of the familiar 3-4-5 right triangle.

A bus travels 120 km in 2.5 hours. What is its average speed?

    Correct answer: D. 48 km/h

    Average speed = distance ÷ time = 120 ÷ 2.5 = 48 km/h. To divide by 2.5 easily, double both numbers: 240 ÷ 5 = 48. Average speed is always total distance divided by total time.
